Character Name; Derek Hale
Canon; Teen Wolf
Canon Point; 2x13
Age; Unknown. Looks about 23-25.
House; Thor.
Power; Strength.
Personality;
Angry, closed off and sour, Derek Hale isn't what you'd call a ray of sunshine. With an air of mystery and danger, Derek keeps everything inside, from his motives and thoughts -- only ever letting anger or a threatening glare crawl onto his face.
From the very start Derek's motivation and reasoning has been shrouded in mystery, light only ever shined on his character at his own terms. He doesn't talk about himself much, more willing to lend Scott a hand with his werewolf issues than concentrate on himself, much more preferring to leave others out of his personal business. He's very private, only ever opening up when it's absolutely necessary.
And that's where the catch is, because as much as he might pretend to be solely interested in helping out others, he's also working a different angel of his own gain.
Derek is manipulative to a degree. He uses Scott to get to the Alpha, the goal throughout the beginning (season one) being solely to gain revenge on those who'd killed and hunted his family, and to become the top dog. He knows how to play his cards right, knows the importance of the information he holds for Scott, and knows how to play people's weakness' against them, like when he was shot by a magic bullet which would have killed him had he not declared that Scott needed him to survive.
He also lures Erica into joining his pack with promises of her life getting better, putting up an act of good intentions when only he needs his Pack to grown because with more packmates, the Alpha's powers grow as well. It's not that he doesn't care entirely, but his motivations are sometimes very selfish as well.
Despite the negative light cast over his character, Derek isn't evil. He doesn't take most of the paths one will find him on solely to hurt those around him. Everything is for the bigger goal.
Rough around the edges and downright broody, Derek has a tough shell around himself, keeping people at a far distance. It's only when using Scott for his own gains doesn't work out without him having to reveal things about himself that we find out what's hardened that shell around him. He keeps people away with threats, going so far as to get physical at times to make the intimidation sets in and is understood.
He was hurt and betrayed by the woman he thought he loved, who he thought loved him back, and lost most of his family thanks to her. Needless to say his mistrust (especially of humans) is great, though it doesn't stop him from completely interacting with them. Neither does he hurt to kill humans unless it's completely necessary.
"Everyone wants power."
He's aggressive and arrogant. The more his motives are revealed, the more it becomes apparent that not only does he want to get to the bottom of who set the fire that burned his family or finding the Alpha, but he also simply wants the power of it. With power he can do more, protect more people he cares about because in the end everything Derek does is because of losing the people he loves.
Derek Hale is angry. Anger is how he keep control, anger is his anchor, and focus on the human emotion is what ties him down, holds him off from going bloodlust crazy during a full moon. Anger courses through him like blood, it feeds his fire to do most things, everything from finding and helping Scott to running a new pack of werewolves and taking down the Kanima. Anger over the loss of everyone he holds dear, anger over his own weakness' and mistakes -- it keeps him breathing when without it he could have seen the last of his days much earlier.
Quite literally a lone wolf in the beginning, Derek does end up opening up a little though. He has moments of comedy, going as far as trying out different shirts for Danny (a classmate of Stile's with a preference for men) when he and Stiles needed Danny to track a phone call for them. So he knows when to roll with things, can put himself out like that despite the murderous expression throughout the entire ordeal.
He'll do a lot for his own cause, and is serious about getting to his set goals. He even stands against those who helped him before when he believes Lydia Martin is the mysterious creature killing people. It takes some hardcore convincing from Scott to get him to back off as once Derek feels his Pack (the few people he seems to care about) be threatened, he sets himself to clearing the problem no matter who or what is involved.
As an Alpha, Derek tries his best. He's bitten off way more than he can chew however, and despite his hard disposition, Derek is still young, the role of Alpha weighing heavily on his shoulders. Incompetent to a point, he doesn't open up about his lack of knowledge on how to handle a pack, instead preferring to once again try to figure things out by himself. Needless to say, this closed off part of him brings more harm than good because he's so incapable opening up.
In short, Derek Hale is a serious, slowly crumbling werewolf who is learning that his way isn't always the best, and that teamwork with those least likely to get the job done is sometimes the only way to get the job done. He's learning as much as anyone his age would be, though his lack of willing to change certain things about himself is starting to get people -- or his pack -- hurt and that realization is slowly dawning on him.
Derek might be an sourwolf of the worst degree, but really, when you look past the glaring set of wolfish red eyes and sharp canines, it's clear that this is a wolf who bit off far too much for his own good and is having much trouble dealing with the consequences.
